Surgeon’s Diploma Issued to Franz Gebell, Wien, 1836<\/span><\/h1>\n

We, the Director and the Dean of the medical- surgical studies at the ancient and world famous University of Vienna confirm publicly that Franz Gebell, born in Cracow in Poland, having undertaken the proper course of study, underwent the rigorous exams in surgery and obstetrics, so as to obtain the right to practise both. At the exams he passed on November 21, 1835 and May 25, 1836, he presented such evidence of dexterity gained and knowledge absorbed that all the examiners acknowledged their full satisfaction with him; for which reason we, by the powers we received from the highest places, admit, proclaim and confirm him to be a competent and experienced surgeon, so that everyone respects him as such and so that he can conduct his art everywhere he is authorized to, presuming he will always follow the oath he swore at our faculty. Withal he is bound, as per the Court Chancery Directive of 21 October 1813, by the duty conscientiously and truthfully to inform the clergymen responsible for keeping birth registries of everything known to him of the name of the child\u2019s mother and her status as married or unmarried, otherwise, as soon as the first untruth is revealed, he will be punished beyond the regular sentence prescribed by law by the loss of his right to practise his art as well. To affirm the foresaid we have had Franz Gebell issued with this diploma, furnished with the great faculty seal and the signatures of our Dean and our Notary in their own hand.<\/p>\n

Wir, Praeses und Decanus der medizinisch-chirurgischen Fakult\u00e4t an der uralten und weltber\u00fchmten Universit\u00e4t zu Wien in Oesterreich bekennen hiermit \u00f6ffentlich, da\u00df Franz Gebell aus Krakau in Pohlen geb\u00fcrtig, nach vorschriftsm\u00e4\u00dfig zur\u00fcckgelegten Studium den allerh\u00f6chst bestimmten strengen Pr\u00fcfungen aus der Wundarzneykunst und aus der Geburtsh\u00fclfe sich unterzogen habe, um ein Recht zur Aus\u00fcbung, sowohl der einen als der anderen zu erlangen. Derselbe gab bey der mit Ihm am 21ten November 1835 und am 25ten May 1836 vorgenommenen strengen Pr\u00fcfungen solche Beweise von erworbenen Geschicklichkeit und sich eigen gemachter Wissenschaft, da\u00df alle Pr\u00fcfer ihre vollkommene Zufriedenheit \u00fcber Ihn bezeugten, we\u00dfwegen Wir Ihn dann nach der Aus allerh\u00f6chst ertheilten Macht als einen tauglichen und wohlerfahrenen Wundarzt wie auch als einen tauglichen und wohlerfahrenen Geburtshelfer erkennen, erkl\u00e4ren und best\u00e4tigen, so zwar, da\u00df Ihn Jedermann als solchen zu erkennen habe, und Er aller Orten, in welchen Er dazu berechtigt ist, seinen Kunst aus\u00fcben m\u00f6ge und k\u00f6nne, wobey Er sich immer nach dem bey unserer Facultaet abgelegten Eide sich zu verhalten haben wird. \/ vertatur\/ Uibrigens wird demselben in Folge hoher Hofkanzley-Verordnung vom 21. October 1813 auch zur Pflicht gemacht: mit der strengsten Gewissenhaftigkeit und Wahrheit die Seelsorger als F\u00fchrer des Geburtsb\u00fccher von dem, was Ihm von dem Namen des Kindesmutter und von ihrer Verehlichung oder Nichteverehlichung bekannt ist zu unterrichten, widrigenfalls er bey der ersten hierin entdeckten Unwahrheit au\u00dfer der \u00fcbrigen gesetzlichen Strafe noch mit dem Verluste des Rechtes seine Kunst ausz[u]\u00fcben bestraft werden w\u00fcrde. \/ Zur Best\u00e4tigung des Gesagten haben Wir dem Franz Gebell dieses mit dem gr\u00f6\u00dferen Fakult\u00e4ts-Siegel gezierte und mit der eigenh\u00e4ndigen Unterschrift unseres Decans und Notars gefertigte Diplom zustellen la\u00dfen.<\/p>\n
